Tails & Tales (birds, Netherlands)

Bij een natuurfoto serie hoort zo nu en dan ook een verhaal. Van de 'jacht' en de 'vangst'. 'Tails & Tales' verhaalt over enkele van de meest boeiende belevenissen van mijn vogelfotografie.

The West-Netherlands coastal dune belt counts a healthy goshawk population. Shooting images at their nesting sites is a favourite yearly spring passtime.

In de Hollandse duinstreek is
de havik inmiddels als stand- en broedvogel ruim aanwezig. Elk voorjaar beleef ik veel spanning en plezier aan de 'jacht' op mijn haviken.

Water Rail (E)
Waterral (N)


The water rail is a shy and  elusive bird one best sees and 'shoots' in the winter season. When ice and snow  pin it down in favourite shelter spots.


De waterral is een tamelijk schuwe vogel, die zich het best in de winter laat 'schieten'. Wanneer zij, door sneeuw en ijs gedwongen, zich in vaste beschutte 'hangplekken' ophouden.

The sparrowhawk breeds in the dunes and lining forest on the Dutch West coast. But it also visits the backyard hunting for our garden birds


De sperwer broedt in de duinen langs de Hollandse west kust. Maar komt ook 'aan huis' in zijn/haar jacht op onze tuinvogels.

Despite their 'black&white' profile and thieving reputation, magpies can be quite 'colourful' in unexpected 'out-of-the ordinary' behaviours. 

De ekster is niet één van de meest bekoorde vogels. Om zijn zwart-wit uiterlijk en  vanwege zijn brutale diefachtige reputatie.
Toch is ook de ekster wel eens kleurrijk op zijn tijd ......

Tawny owl (E)
Bosuil (N)


Nicknamed the 'Beks owl', this tawny owl is a regular breeder in some hollowed-out beech trees along the Beks lane (D: Bekslaan) near the Dutch village of Vogelenzang.

Deze bosuil, bijgenaamd de 'Beksuil', broedt jaarlijks in oude holle beuken aan de Bekslaan even buiten het dorp Vogelenzang.

The red-crested pochard is a yearly winter visitor to the West-Netherlands coastal dunes and canals of the 'Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen'.

De Krooneend is jaarlijks in de wintermaanden te vinden in het inwateringsgebied van de 'Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen'.

Zwartbuik Waterspreeuw (N)

The black-bellied dipper is a rather rare winter migrant to the Netherlands from its summer breeding ranges in Scandinavia. The Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen offer a unique wintering habitat of flowing waters (canals and cascades) that don't freeze over even in colder winters.

De zwartbuik waterspreeuw is een tamelijk zeldzame wintergast vanuit zijn broedgebieden in Scandinavië.
De Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen bieden een unieke overwinterings habitat van stromend water (kanalen en vijvers) die zelfs in koudere winters ijs-vrij blijven.

The hobby is a regular summer migrant returning to the Netherlands in April. Synchronous with the returning swallows and swifts.
The Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen are a favourite area for hobby's hunting (mainly dragonflies).

De boomvalk keert terug in Nederland in april. Tegelijkertijd met de zwaluwen bij het verschijnen van de vroege insecten.
De Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen zijn een favoriet jachtgebied (libellen voornamelijk).

The spotted flycatcher is an uncommon summer migrant to the Netherlands, with the breeding population declining over the past decades. It is a more rare breeding bird of the  Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen along the Netherlands West coast.

De grauwe vliegenvanger is een niet algemene zomergast in Nederland, met een gestaag dalende broedpopulatie over de afgelopen decennia. In de Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinenlangs de west kust is het een onregelmatig meer zelden broedende vogel.

The Common Kingfisher is a relatively common resident bird throughout the Netherlands. A good spotting area is the inner dune belt along the Netherlands West coast.

De ijsvogel is een tamelijk algemene standvogel door heel Nederland. Een favotiet gebied is de binnenduin zone langs de Hollandse kust.

The Great Grey Shrike is present in the Netherlands as a winter migrant in small numbers (several hundreds). The dunes along the Werst coast are one of its favoured habitats

De klapekster is een overwinteraar in Nederland in een klein aantal van enkele hondertallen. De duinstreek is één van preferente overwinteringsgebieden.

The Little Ringed Plover breeds throughout the Netherlands territory in quite small but steadily rising number. In most recent years with a population of some 1000-1500 pairs (info Sovon).

De Kleine Plevier broedt in Nederland in kleine maar gestaag toenemende aantallen. De huidige broedpopulatie wordt geschat op 1000-1500 paar (info Sovon).

A bird ringing station ('VRS AW-duinen') is in operation for already more than five decades in the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen (AWD) in the dune belt along the Dutch West coast. A recent visit to the station (23/08/2019) is very worthy a story.

In de Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen (AWD) langs de Hollandse westkust opereert al ruim 50 jaar lang een vogel ringstation. Een bezoek onlangs aan dit station (23/08/2019) is een verhaal meer dan waard.

The Eurasian Nuthatch is a common resident breeding bird. It has a prominent presence in the forested inner dunes of the Amsterdamse Waterleiding duinen (AWD) along the Dutch West coast. This Tail &Tale features the nesting activities of a pair and their young.

In de Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen (AWD) langs de Hollandse westkust is de boomklever een algemene stand-/broedvogel. Deze Tail&Tale toont de activiteiten van een broedpaar en hun jongen.

The European Green Woodpecker is a rather common breeding bird. Small numbers of breeding pairs are found in the dune belt ('Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen - AWD') along the Dutch West coast. This 'Tail&Tale' features the feeding and fledging of a pair and their young.

In de Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen (AWD) langs de Hollandse westkust is de groenespecht aan tamelijk algemene stand-/broedvogel. Deze Tail&Tale toont in de late broedfase het voeden van de jongen en hun uitvliegen.

The hoopoe is a rare migrant summer visitor to The Netherlands. Seeing one is at best a few in a lifetime experience ( .... and lifetime memory). Their breeding in 2020 in the Dutch West coast dune belt was head lines news.

De hop is een zeldzame zomergast in Nederland. Er één zien is zo'n gebeurtenis die je je leven lang bijblijft. Het unieke broedgeval in 2020 in de Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen haalde de pers.

The Woodcock breeding population in The Netherlands is only a couple of thousands pairs strong. Winter numbers are considerably higher, with migration into the country of birds from their breeding ranges in Scandinavia,  Northwest Europe and Russia.

De houtsnip broedt in Nederland in bescheiden aantallen (een paar duizend paar). De winter aantallen liggen aanzienlijk hoger door overwinterende vogels uit Scandinavië, NM-Europa, en Rusland.

The long-tailed tit is that cute eye-catcher among the tits endemic in the Netherlands. Not a 'real tit' (by DNA) but nonetheless called a 'tit'. Its nest is as much an eye-catcher as its pretty looks. Finally finding a nest was a silver-lined occasion. And so was the joy of observing and photographing the whole family.

De staartmees scores hoog in uiterlijk onder 's lands mezen. Geen 'echte mees' in de puurste (DNA) zin maar een sierlijke 'mees' niettemin. Zijn nest is al even sierlijk als zijn uiterlijk. Het ontdekken van een nest was een hoogtepunt. En het beginpunt van deze bijzonder boeiende waarnemingen en fotografie.

The Wood Warbler is a scarse migrant breeder in the Netherlands. Its nesting habitat is confined to dense woodlands with sparse undergrowth. This habitat is found o.a. along the inner fringe of the  dune belt along the West coast

De fluiter is een schaarse trekkende broedvogel in Nederland. Hij nestelt in aaneengesloten bos met weinig onderbegroeiing. Deze habitat is o.a. te vinden op de binnen duinrand langs de West kust.

The Lesser Spotted Woodpecker is an uncommon resident breeding bird in the Netherlands. Found mainly in central, Eastern and Southern parts of the country. Small numbers are found in the wooded part of the dune belt along the West coast.

De kleine bonte specht is een niet algemene broedvogel die merendeels voorkomt in de centrale, Oostelijke en zuidelijke delen van het land. Bescheden aantallen broeden in de duinbossen langs de West kust.

The Western Barn Owl breeding population in the Netherlands lies in a range of 1500-2000 pairs (Sovon).  Its presence concentrates in farmland habitat. It is only scarsely present in the dune belt along the West coast.

De kerkuil broedpopulatie in Nederland telt 1500-2000 pairs (Sovon). Hun voorkomen concentreert zich in agrarisch gebied. In de duinstreek langs de West kust komt de kerkuil maar zeer sporadisch voor.

The Long-eared Owl breeding population in the Netherlands is of modest size (2K-3K pairs) and steadily declining (trend over past 50 years, source Sovon).

De ransuil broedpopulatie wordt geschat op 2K-3K paren, met een gestage dalende trend over de afgelopen 50 jaar (bron Sovon).

The Common Moorhen, a species of rail, is a very familiar bird for many living in the water-rich Netherlands. It has an estimated breeding population of 25-35K pairs; Source Sovon).

Velen in het waterrijke Nederland kennen de waterhoen. De broedpopultatie wordt geschat op 25-35K paren; Bron Sovon).

The Middle Spotted Woodpecker is a rare all-year bird in the Netherlands with a breeding population of some 2400 pairs (source Sovon, 2022 estimate)

De Middelste 'Bonte Specht' is vooralsnog zeldzaam in Nederland, maar al enkele tientallen jaren toenmend in aantal. De broedpopulatie wordt geschat op rond de 2400 paren (bron: Sovon, 2022)

In the Netherlands a peregrine falcon breeding population has developed over the past 30+ years. By current estimate  (source: Sovon, 2023), it counts 160-180 breeding pairs

De slechtvalk broedpopulatie in ons land  is ontstaan in de laatste 30+ jaar. Huidige aantallen broedparen worden geschat op 160-180 (bron: Sovon, 2023)
