Boomklever

Sitta Europaea

Eurasian Nuthatch

Profiel

Profile

The Eurasian Nuthatch is a familiar resident breeding bird in the country's forests. And for already several decades their numbers are increasing strongly. Estimates in the first 'Atlas of the Dutch Breeding Birds' (Sovon, 1979) numbered 5000-6000 pairs. Current pair estimates (Sovon, 2018) are six times higher (31000-38000). The result of a steady growth of the breeding population over that long period.

With that strong increase its geographical spread also widened significantly, now covering primarily the whole Eastern inland half of the country. And to a lesser extent along the coast, more localised in the narrow forest zone lining the inner coastal dune belt in the provinces of 'North Holland' and 'South Holland'.

Sovon, Broedvogel Monitoring Project (BMP)

Sovon, Broedvogel Monitoring Project (BMP)

The Nuthatch featured prominently this year in my bird count acitivities for the 'Sovon' Breeding Bird Monitoring Project (BMP). I conduct such counting in two areas. One area situated in the middle dunes secion of the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen (AWD), and the second in the inner dune forest area on the 'Huis-te-Vogelenzang' estate grounds, bordering the AWD on the East side.

Its loud and distinct spring calls make the spotting of nuthatches easy. Already the first inventorising count yielded a significant number (7) of occupied nesting sites, some on the estate grounds and some directly adjacent in the AWD.  One in the AWD was particularly well suited for photography, given its  position only just a couple of metres up in a white poplar. Over a period of eight weeks (25 March-20 May), I captured the following photo series of the fascinating activities of the nuthatch pair and their young. From the initial nest building to the flying out of the young.

The Nuthatch pair has selected a former nest cavity of a Great Spotted Woodpecker from foregoing years. Besides a rigorous clean-out of the cavity, the nuthatches also do a great job remodelling the nest cavity entrance. The entrance opening is quite oversized for the considerably smaller Nuthatch.

No worries. With impressive mastery and persistence the nuthatches reduce the entrance opening diameter. By applying a layer of blackish sticky  plaster (a mix of moisturous earth and decayed plant parts). Here an adult has arrived with yet another bill full of plaster. That is applied repetatively with the bill, shaping ultimately a smooth and even inner ring.

Remarkably the modelling was continued all through the nesting period. Even until the very last day of the flying out. On the fracture face of a once side branch just up from the entrance opening, there were also a couple of small openings. Openings which apparently also extended to and connected with the nest cavity. These were also meticulously sealed off with plaster. Presumably to prevent rain water and perhaps also unwanted insects getting in.

Jongen voeren

Feeding the young

Feeding their ravenous young is an intensive day-filling task for breeding pair adults. Many small and medium-sized breeding birds of the inner dune forest have the advantage that the unfolding lushgreen spring foliage of the numerous large oak trees is on the menu of masses of small caterpillars, o.a. of the Green Oak Tortrix (Tortrix viridana). Here one of the adult birds arrives with a bill full of these.

And what goes in by the bill full is, after rapid digestion, carried out as droppings .These droppings are shaped as small white sacks with a firm fleece cover. The adult birds dispose of these systematically to keep the nest cavity clean and clear of bugs.

The seemingly odd feature of the photo below is the apparent reversed position of the adult bird. Sitting with the dropping 'diper' in the bill and looking inward, rather than flying straigth out with it.
It was remarkable seeing that the dropping wasn't collected by the adult inside the nest cavity. Waiting there outside, it got passed the 'diper'.....from the inside by the young itself.

For many bird species it is known that the young themselves contribute actively (and ingeneously !) in the disposal of their droppings. For example by ejecting it in fluid form directly outward from the edge of the nest. For which they reverse  themselves in a 'tail-pointing-outward' position (see Goshawk T&T). Or for example by delivering the dropping to the waiting adult straight in a butt-up transfer (see Spotted Flycatcher T&T).

Here an almost ready-to-fly young (invisible, back in the entrance)  passes this dropping to the waiting parent outside.
I was lucky to notice the actual passing movement. From my position it was not possible to see if the young passed the dropping in its bill. Given the passing through this narrow opening, this seems the only plausible assumption.

Fledging time is nearing

One has these hopes but the chance of catching the very moment is very small of course. Being able to see....and photograph .... the fledging of the young. This happened nonetheless unexpectedly on the morning of May 20th. Three days earlier there were already indications that the moment of flying out wasn't far off anymore. Several times, a young stuck its head out of the nest cavity opening. The adult birds also acted in an unusual way, seen captured in the three photos below.
There was the regular feeding as 'normal' but in between flights one adult stayed  hanging in the opening for quite a while. The other adult joined with collected caterpillars in the bill. Instead of feeding these to the young, it passed these 'bill-to-bill' to the other adult. After flying off they both returned again simultaneously and hung side-by-side in front of the nest cavity opening. One adult carried in its bill some of the familiar black earthy 'motar' and applied that onto the side of the opening. It also passed a bit of it to the other adult, again 'bill-to-bill'.

But then both resumed their regular order-of-the-day activities......flying their individual feeding shuttles for the young ones.

Op de vleugels

Uitvliegen.

On wings

Fledging. I simply hadn't contemplated the possibility of seeing it, let alone counting on it. At the start of my photoshoot that morning, the feeding shuttles by both adults were going on as normal. They did their feeding hanging in front of the opening. They didn't enter anymore as done until then. Young were visible in the entrance most of the time. Often sticking their heads out a little.

An adult bird standing at the nest cavity opening has just fed the young visible in the back of the entrance

Suddenly one of the young dared to venture farther out of the entrance. Its toes now also out holding onto the edge. It clearly had no more a way of getting back in again. It sat there for a short stint and then surprised me completely by making its first fluttering flight. To a thin oak only a couple of metres away. An adult bird immediately joined it there and fed it. I had barely  got back to my senses after this startling moment when I saw already another young moving outward in the entrance. Also this one didn't hesitate and emerged outside in full. Rather than fluttering off as its predecessor, it decided to give its skills of bark-clinging a first try. It climbed for a bit and then pauzed a while about a metre above the entrance.

The young demonstrates its innate bark-clinging skills and pauzes,  hanging in suspense vertically. A scary moment for it .......as the falling dropping testifies.

The other young follow suite rapidly.

It was amusing to see how two appeared simultaneously in the entrance. One already outside in the 'toes-on-the-edge' pose. The second one directly behind in the entrance passage and determined to look out as well. By sticking its head out in between the legs of the one in front.

For one emerging young the first step almost became a plunge. Intensive wing fluttering spared it a drop and kept hanging there briefly before it mustered rebalancing in 'nuthatch style'.

The female feeds the young that is the last one to leave the nest.

One adult finally hung briefly at the opening. Checking if any young were still in there, but there weren't. All six of them had made their way out by then. It then flew off to join them in the near surroundings.

It was a beautiful and for me a first time ever experience to observe such fledging life. To see them all take to their legs and wings, accompanied by their caring parents. It was fascinating to follow their activities through the entire breeding period of eight weeks, enjoying close-up viewing and captures through binoculars and camera (Canon 1D M-III, 500/700 mm).

A 'Tail and Tale' memory I surely will treasure for long after.
