As the saying goes, 'one swallow does not make a summer'.
But the first swallows and swifts that wing back into the Netherlands from tropical Africa, late March - early April, are the sure tell-tale that spring is in the air. And the Eurasion Hobbys are following very closely on their wings.
In the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen along the Dutch West coast an early spring (April/May) spectacle is the mass swarming of the St. Mark's fly (Bibio marci). They become easy on-the-wing pickings for the swallows and swifts and for the early dragonflies. Both in their turn are on the menu of the Eurasion Hobby. Suddenly, millions of flies and these three winged 'acrobates' set the spring sky alive.
Zoals het spreekwoord zegt, één zwaluw maakt nog geen zomer'. Maar de eerst verschijnende zwaluwen, eind maart begin april, zijn bij uitstek de bodes van ons 'voorjaarsgevoel'. Terugkerend uit tropisch Afrika worden zij 'op de vleugel gevolgd' door de boomvalken.
In de Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen aan de Hollands westkust, eind april begin mei, zwermt de Maartse vlieg (Bibio marci) uit. Voedsel in overvloed voor de zwaluwen en voor de vroege libellen. Beiden staan op hun beurt op het menu van de boomvalk. Door miljoenen zwarte Maartse vliegjes en deze drie luchtacrobaten komt de voorjaarslucht abrupt tot leven.

Hunting for its favourite insects (dragonflies) and, if the opportunity arises, also small birds (swallows, swifts). A fascinating spectacle of air acrobatics at its very best.
Boomvalk ...... super specialist jager op hope snelheid.
Jagend op zijn favoriete insecten (libellen) en, als de gelegenheid zich voordoet, ook op kleine vogels (zwaluwen). Een fascinerend schouwspel van luchtacrobatiek op z'n best.

Hobby photography - a flashy hobby
Long telelens (500-700 mm) photography of hunting hobbies is an exciting activity. Bringing and keeping them into sharp close-up focus in their high-speed full flight is not the least of challenges but good fun nonetheless. Sometimes one 'cooperates' as it briefly slows down into 'first gear' gliding to dismember and eat its caught dragonfly. Disposing in mid air the prey reject parts (wings and hard skeleton parts). Just a short moment later gearing up again into full speed hunting for its next bite.

Het fotograferen van jagende boomvalken met lange telelenzen (500-700 mm) is een enerverende bezigheid. Om ze in beeld en scherpe focus te krijgen en te houden is een uitdaging, maar tegelijkertijd een leuke sport. Soms werk er één mee als die kort overgaat in een 'eerste versnelling' glijvlucht om een gevangen libel te ontleden en op te peuzelen. Waarbij in volle vlucht de eetbare prooidelen rap worden gescheiden van het 'afval' (vleugels, harde skelet stukjes). Om zeer kort daarna de jacht op volle snelheid weer te hervatten.

Maakt een korte 'eerste versnelling' glijvlucht om een gevangen libel te ontleden en op te eten. In zijn snavel zichtbaar nog een libellevleugel die een tel later weg dwarrelt met de wind.

The frantic hunt for the dragonflies is on in May when the hobbies replenish their fat reserves consumed on their long migration back from Southern Africa. Sudden fast wingbeat accelerations, intermittant glides and sudden turns and twists. Air acrobatics at their best.

De intense jacht op libellen piekt in mei. De boomvalken vullen dan hun vermagerde vet reserves weer aan, waarop zij geteerd hebben op de lange trek terug van hun overwinteringsgebieden in zuidelijk Afrika. Plotselinge acceleraties met snelle vleugelslagen, af en toe glijdend en plotselinge scherpe wendingen. Lucht acrobatiek op z'n best.

Spiedend naar vliegende libellen. Zij zien hun prooi van imponerende afstand, getuige de soms lange versnelde doelgerichte (duik)vlucht waarna zij even rustig uitglijden om hun gevangen prooi te ontleden en te eten.
