Als er één vogel is waarvan het Hollandse vogelaars hart sneller gaat kloppen (....en wellicht zelfs een slag overslaat ...), dan is het wel de iconische hop. Met zijn imposante verenpracht en zijn prachtige karakteristieke 'vlinderachtige' vlucht scoort de hop huizenhoog op de schoonheidslijst van
's Neerlands avifauna.
Helaas zien we de hop maar zelden binnen de grenzen, en hij broedt hier maar uiterst incidenteel. De Vogelatlas van Nederland (Sovon, 2018) vermeldt acht zekere broedgevallen in de laatste halve eeuw, in Oost en Zuid-Oost Nederland. Voor een broedgeval in West Nederland in de duinstreek (Kennemerduinen) moeten wij zelfs zeventig jaar terug.
Zelf zag ik een hop maar één keer in (West) Nederland. Dat was in 1976, op de grens van Spaarnwoude en het Noordzeekanaal bij de pont van Buitenhuis. Daarmee behorend tot dat exclusieve rijtje van even mooie als onvergetelijke vogelwaarnemingen, die mij levenslang in haarscherp detail zullen bijblijven.

The one bird that will make the heart beat of Dutch birders jump (...or even skip..) is the iconic Eurasian Hoopoe. Its splendid plumage and its intriguing butterfly-like flight make the hoopoe rank high on the 'beauty list' of the Dutch avifauna.
Sadly, the hoopoe is very rarely seen in the country, and it only barely registers as an endemic breeding bird. The Bird Atlas of the Netherlands (Sovon, 2018) lists eight confirmed breeding cases in the past half a century, in the East and South-East. In the West, the last recorded case goes back even a whopping seventy years.
I saw a hoopoe in the Netherlands (Western part) only once. That was in 1976 at the boundary of Spaarnwoude and the North Sea Canal at the 'Buitenhuis' ferry. This sighting is in that very exclusive short list of my unforgetable Dutch birding experiences, which stick as lifetime memories and never loose the sparkel of detail.
Juveniele hop (man) gevangen en geringd door Vogelringstation 'VRS-AWDuinen'. Twee dagen eerder werd al een eerste hop gevangen en geringd. Deze vangsten hangen samen met het unicum in juni dit jaar, van een geslaagd broedgeval van de hop in de AWD waarbij vijf jongen zijn uitgevlogen.
Na het ringen toont hij hier nog even zijn iconische schoonheid, in de hand van VRS-AWD ringer Wil Tamis. Na een paar snelle fotos 'vlinderde' hij weer weg.

After the ringing the hoopoe is held briefly in the hand by Wil Tamis, to enjoy its iconic beauty and to quickly get it on photo before it 'butterflied' away again.

Broedgeval (2020) in de 'AWD'
En dan is er, zeventig jaar later, dan toch eindelijk weer een nieuw broedgeval in de duinstreek. Dit keer in de Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen (AWD). Een zorgvuldig uit de publiciteit gehouden broedgeval, dat uiteindelijk in juni een succesvolle finale had met het uitvliegen van vijf jongen. Pas een maand later (19 juli) is daar ruchtbaarheid aan gegeven.

And then, seventy years later, there finally is a new case of breeding in the Western coastal dune belt. This time in the 'Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen' (AWD). Given its uniqueness, it was kept as a closely guarded secret until after the succesful fledging of five young. Only another month later (July 19) was the case made public.
Vogel Ringstation 'VRS AWDuinen'
Het ringstation 'VRS AWDuinen' is al decennia lang actief in de AWD. Het Jubileumverslag 'Van 50 jaar Vogelringstation AW Duinen 1966-2015' vermeldt een 'Totaallijst van vogels geringd in de AWD van 1957 t/m/2014'. Die telt maar liefst 203 vogelsoorten en ondersoorten, maar de hop ontbreekt dus in die imposante lijst.
De euforie was dan ook zeer groot, toen op 17 juli de eerste hop werd gevangen en geringd. Het was een juveniel exemplaar. Zonder twijfel dus één van de vijf jongen die in juni in de AWD waren uitvlogen. En, .........de euforie werd nog groter, toen op de volgende ring dag op 19 juli een tweede juveniel (♂) werd gevangen en geringd.

The Bird Ringing Station 'VRS AWDuinen' operates in the AWD for already several decades. Their fifty years jubileum publication 'Van 50 jaar Vogelringstation AW Duinen 1966-2015' presents a list of all bird species ringed in the AWD from 1957 to 2014. On the list are an impressive 203 species and subspecies. But....the hoopoe is not on it.
So the euforia was complete, when on July 17, the first ever hoopoe was netted and ringed. It was a juvenile male. Without doubt one of the five young that fledged in the AWD in June.
And, .....the euforia swearled even higher, when on the next ringing day just two days later (July 19) a second juvenile (♂) was caught and ringed.
Na het aanbrengen van de ring, wordt nog even gecontroleerd of het een volwassen of een juveniele vogel is. De conclusie is een juveniel. Dus een tweede van de vijf jongen, die in juni in de AWD zijn uitgevlogen.
After applying the ring, it is quickly verified whether this hoopoe is an adult or a juvenile. Juvenile is the conclusion. So a second of the five young which fledged in the AWD in June.

Vervolg .....?
Met de twee gevangen jonge hoppen is de hoop en spanning gegroeid, dat later wellicht nog meer individuen gevangen zullen worden.
Bij de eerdere waarnemingen van het broedpaar was vastgesteld, dat één van de ouder vogels een geringd individu is met een buitenlandse ring. Mogelijke terugvangst door de VRS AWDuinen zou dus uitsluitsel kunnen geven over de buitenlandse herkomst van deze hop.
En de grote vraag is natuurlijk, of het paartje hoppen misschien ook in volgende broedseizoenen zal terugkeren in de AWD. Gezien de huidige statistieken lijkt die kans uiterst klein, maar volgend voorjaar zal stellig toch met veel belangstelling en hoop weer naar hen worden uitgekeken.
A repeat ....?
The almost back-to-back catching of the two hoopoes has raised the hope and tension of possibly catching even more of the other birds (adults and/or other young).
Through earlier observations near the nest site it was noted that one of the adult birds is ringed (foreign ring). So its possible re-catching by VRS AWDuinen could reveal the birth origin of this bird.
And as exciting is the question whether the breeding pair will return to the AWD in the next year(s). Given the current statistics the chance of that happening looks most unlikely. But surely that will not lessen the hope and interest next spring, to look out for them again.
