South Luangwa (Zambia) - Mammals

The South Luangwa National Park has one of the largest concentrations of animals in East and South Afrika. The large size of the park (9000+ sq. km), its varied vegetation, and the year around presence of water in the Luangwa river and in some of its tributaries provide  year around dependable habitats for animals in large varieties and numbers.

Our Norman Carr safaris guides had excellent knowledge of the wildlife.  Our guarding 'men-with-the-rifles' were without exception professionals and most pleasant company.

On our eight days walks and drives we saw plenty of wildlife.  During the evening drives we saw some of the nocturnally active mammals. Most eye-catching were the leopard, the civet and the genet.  Daytime photography was entertaining enough for me not to try my luck also on night shooting. It was good to see that the restriction/ban on using flash light during night drives was strictly applied, which made shooting at night a non-starter anyway.

The below photo galleries feature the most eye-catching mammals we saw in the daytime.
