Een vrouwtje appelvink voedt zich met haagbeuk zaden

In de loop van mijn tientallen 'vogeljaren' heb ik appelvinken maar (zeer) zelden gezien. Wonend in de binnenduinstreek van Noord Holland is dat niet verwonderlijk. Tot de tweede helft van de tachtiger jaren kwam de appelvink daar als broedvogel in het geheel niet voor. Vanaf die tijd zijn de aantallen broedparen in geheel Nederland aanzienlijk toegenomen en is ook de binnenduinstreek bezet. Sovon vermeldt dat deze abrupte toename mogelijk samenhing met een ongewoon grote invasie van appelvinken in de winter van 1986 uit hun meer noordelijke en oostelijke broedgebieden.
Talrijk zijn ze hier in de binnenduinstreek nog altijd zeker niet. Hooguit enkele tientallen broedparen. Van de (maar) 200-300 geschatte broedparen in geheel Noord Holland, broedt het allergrootste deel in het Gooi.
Het merendeel van mijn waarnemingen van appelvinken waren opmerkelijk genoeg pal in mijn eigen achtertuin in Vogelenzang. Meestal maar één enkele keer per jaar en lang niet alle jaren. Het waren duidelijk altijd de haagbeuk zaden waarvoor zij kwamen.
In the course of my tens of 'birding years', I have seen hawfiches only very few times. Given my living residence in the Western part of the country on the inner side of the coastal dunebelt, this is not surprising. Until the second half of the eighties hawfiches didn't bread at all in this part of the country. From that time onward, the numbers of breeding pairs have increased significantly and expanded also into the inner dunebelt. Sovon records that this abrupt increase probably correlates with an unusually large invasion of hawfinches from their more northerly and easterly breeding ranges in the winter of 1986.
They still are only rarely seen though in the inner dunebelt along the Dutch West coast. Breeding numbers here are very low, several tens of pairs at the most. Of the (Sovon-reported) estimated breeding numbers of 200-300 pairs in entire 'North Holland' province, the greater majority breeds in its most Southeasterly part 'het Gooi'.
The majority of my sightings of hawfiches were, of all places, right in my own backyard in Vogelenzang. Not more than once in a year while none at all for most of the years. They were always there to feed on the seeds of the hornbeam.
De enorme snavel van de appelvink komt op deze foto mooi naar voren (letterlijk). Daarmee kraakt en breekt hij harde zaden zoals van deze haagbeuk.
The enormous bill of the hawfinch sticks out (literally) in this photo. it serves the hawfinch to crack and cut hard seeds like the ones of this hornbeam.
